A while back I was having a conversation with a couple about how taking Hot Yoga could help them with their health. That’s a surprise right? Just stay with me here, I’m going somewhere with it. During our conversation the gentleman says “You know, I have to use an oxygen machine with a mask to help me with my breathing while I sleep. And I think I can handle that if I need to do it for the rest of my life.” Before I could respond his wife says; “Are you kidding me? Honey, I can’t handle that! Do you think I enjoy looking at you with a mask over your face? How can you think it’s ok to rely on a machine to help you breathe at night? What about me and the kids? We love you, we don’t want that for you.”
On another occasion, I was listening to a woman who was telling about all the medicine bottles she had on her bed side table. While she explained to me how much she needed all this medication and how much it helped her, her son interrupted and said, “Mom, when you miss one of those pills you’re no longer the same person. You change! Sometimes you become very angry and other times you’re very depressed. They’re really not really helping you mom!”
Then I was having a conversation with a woman who was telling me how much she struggled with her weight. She stated that she did multiple exercise programs throughout the week and that nothing was working. She was frustrated and just felt like giving up. I attempted to talk to her about Hot Yoga, but she interrupted me every chance she had to give me an excuse why it wouldn’t work. Her schedule wouldn’t fit with Pura Vida’s schedule. She needed to run and she wasn’t about to give that up. She liked lifting weights and she couldn’t pass up on it. She had hired a personal trainer and she didn’t know how he would feel if she cancelled him. She had her routine and it was just impossible to add anything more to it. I asked her to practice yoga five times per week for two months to test it and she said I love doing what I do and I just don’t think I could stop.
If you read between the lines you can see that many of us continue to do what’s most comfortable for us. And it’s so difficult to do what’s right for us. At times we don’t realize who is affected by our choices. We figure if we’re ok with it everyone else will be or will have to be. For others, we pretend and continue to tell ourselves that as soon as we can we will come off of all that medication and things will somehow go back to normal. And yet others, will complain about the things that aren’t working for them, but will refuse to do anything different. If you were to ask someone who was battling with cancer, heart problems or diabetes what they would want most. They would say their health.
Please don’t misunderstand what I’m saying here, but I need to be frank. If you’re doing the same shit over and over again and it’s not working, it’s time to be honest with yourself and step up your game. You need to be willing to make changes. You can say, “Well Marco I’m sure Hot Yoga is not going to fix everything for me.” And you’re right! But you will! And you’ll do it through the yoga. Many of you know that I struggled with spina bifida for many years and that I used Hot Yoga to make myself better. I’ve witnessed people take less insulin shots for their diabetes by practicing Hot Yoga consistently, I’ve also witnessed people improve on their scoliosis using Hot Yoga. And I’ve seen people come off of depression medication, lose weight, and I’ve spoken with many others who will tell you that they’re just better and more confident when they’re practicing Hot Yoga.
In closing, I’d like to leave you with this. I’ve worked very hard to create a Hot Yoga practice that’s only an hour long. Our classes at Pura Vida includes lunges, push-ups, ab workouts and we create change ups in our sequences to make sure you never become bore and to make sure you never plateau. I assure you you’re not going to lose anything you believe you’ve gained in other forms of exercise. Our practice is not about keeping up with anyone or walking around with big muscles. Our practice is about keeping up with our health. It’s about preventing injuries and building confidence. It’s about realizing that we have different systems in our bodies and that creating balance in them is essential to our overall health. Our practice is about no excuses and being willing to change our mindset to only rely on ourselves. At the end of the day, it’s up to you. You can continue in your comfort zone or you can step up your game and get after it. Please choose the right thing! You deserve it and so do your love ones.
To your health & success,
Marco Gamez
